Reba's Run

Actually it was a 5k called Ryan's Run here in ABQ. Reba ran and Ollie and I got a free massage, some free juice, and pictures with Ronald McDonald and Smokie the Bear. Good times.

Let me tell you something about myself. I've always gotten a big thrill from watching someone I know do something that they truly excel at. Something they really dominate. For example, nothing use to make me happier than to watch Nate May play basketball, especially if I was on his team. Seeing my pal be so dominant at something offered me endless joy and pride (not used to seeing those two words in that particular order are you? Get used to it because the purpose of this blog is to BLOW YOUR MIND!). Or the fact that my brother Braden could put together and successfully direct a full scale, legit play when he was 15. Same with seeing the ever-insightful, pithy, intelligent, original material my bro Ryan puts out on his blog www.romneyexperience.com. Or Jason Bourne fight (I feel like I know him by now). Or watching Eliza play volleyball. Or me at Quantem Theory. Seriously though, I just find it amazing and fascinating that people can be so unbelievably good at some things. Even better is when it's people I know.

Anyway, in this same category is watching Rebecca run in races. She's just so dang fast and it's even more awe-inspiring for me since the particular thing she's rocking is running, and it's just so hard for me to imagine being disciplined enough to become that skilled at running. Anyway, Ollie and I were hanging out at the finish line and I saw the first few guys (these are serious dudes. Young dudes who certainly ran or currently run in college, who have shaved, sculpted legs, John Stockton shorts, and those teeny florescent track shoes that are bought from who-knows where. My mom and I have never seen them in Payless, that's for sure.) sprint in doing 5 and something minute miles. Amazing. So then a few minute pause and this nazi-fast lady comes booking in. I know Reba's fast, but ABQ is FULL of hardcore runners and cyclists and all around outdoor fitness types, so I while I know it's time to prep the camara and retrieve Ollie from the dogs he's crawling around the pavement with, I don't expect to see her for a bit. Then I turn my head after watching the buff lady sprint by and who doth mine eyes behold but little Reba hauling down the track right after the crazy lady. From the combination of how knowing how competitive she can be and from the shock of seeing her up with these heartless sadomasichists, I just started laughing. I grin now just thinking about her on that lady's tail. So congrats to Reba for 2nd place, which she says would have easily been a 1st place if she would have known about the free Southwest Air tickets for 1st place. Kind of like how she got 2nd place at Miss Georgia Teen Queen because it was the affirmative action year so they had to pick a black girl for 1st.
Here's to Speedy Gonzreba!

DIS, Christian, dis is all I have to say. okay, not really, actually this post made me laugh sooo hard. I totally feel the same way about knowing cool accomplished people but I try to hide it. Josh, on the other hand is shameless! all of his buddies/acquaintances know what schools my brothers have been to, how much they make, how their marriages are, and the ups and downs of their careers. : ) (your welcome josh) anyway, way to go Reba! I can't believe how determined and disciplined she is! LOL about affirmative action. oh and cute pics of oli and the dog.

oh and whats up with only having ange's link???? whatever!

lol, piggy, calm down. I only had Ange's up for 40 seconds as I was experimenting with how to add links. When I found the correct formula, I added everyone else. lol about Josh. Love that guy. And love that you'll share anything and everything about him. Probably good incentive for him to never develop a porn or drug problem.

Yay for Rebecca, holy amazing. I am truly so impressed and inspired and I think I'll go take a nap :). Cute pictures, it makes me so happy to see him crawling around with the dogs. Good stuff.

Also, yay Christian for posting! You cracked me up! I miss you guys!

Oh and I think you forgot to say, "or to watch my sister in her stand-up act in Detroit."

ange, lol, or should I say:
"Amen girlfriend!" okay chris you're forgiven for the links, I was a bit hasty, and I know I really am awful at sharing josh's funny stuff, but does anyone blame me? I just can't keep that kind of material to myself, especially when everyone thinks he's mr. nice guy(which he is, he just has a little more sassafrass to him). Btw, anges comment made me laugh hard, especially when I thought of that time when you and me were looking at her while she was talking and we both had a weird out of body experience looking at those lips of hers. LOL, I can't stop laughing how in tune our stalker senses were. : )

Good Going Rebecca! I wish I had the competitive drive she has. BTW, do you guys want to the Wasatch Back in June? We need some good, go getting runners like Rebecca. I am trying to get a team together, and well trying to talk big Ry into it. Should be a fun time, or maybe a horrible experience...we will see.

LOL all of you. What a funny group! It's so fun to think of little Ollie following in his dog-loving Daddy's footsteps.

Most of all, congrats to Speedy Gonzreba!!! I'm so impressed that you could do that, and would do that. What a great achievement!

BTW, Great post, Chris!

Way to go Rebecca! We've always admired those who enjoy a good workout. Around here we prefer the couch:)

Funny post, Kook. This is a pretty amazing thing, seeing that kind of drive in a person. That's a little foreign in our family, so it must be impressive to see up close.

And thanks for finding a talent for me to have- it's been a long time since I've had a "talent," since I outgrew my soccer prodigy label around age nine.

Chris, I am shameless in my admiration of those I love when doing something they are good at. I smile like EJ Neilson--like when I asked if you could help me figure how to move the entertainment center--getting other guys and a dolly or whatever--and you just picked it up and moved it. It sounds dumb--it is dumb, but I loved it. Great post. Reba, you are the WOMAN. I'm so glad you've added to the gene pool--although by the pics it doesn't look like Ollie has the eye of the tiger so far. We miss you SO much. Greg

That is awesome. I remember going to a cross country race with you and you were feeling uncomfortable about the way some TALL stork was running that you had your eye on. I'm glad that you settled down with someone who runs with a stride you can be proud of. BTW, nice job Reba!

christian@dontdodumbthings.com said...

Layne, how funny that you bring that up, because the day of Reba's race she asked me if she looked dumb when she runs and I told her that compared to the the stork you refer to, her gait is beautiful.

Wow, what up with you and Layne marrying Olympic grade runners? What kind of pact did you two enter down there in Provo?
Big-time congrats Reba. As Clayton Pehrson and I always say, this is giving the Bells up on the hill something to ring'a'ding about.
Very fun and funny post CSB.
While I'm appreciative of your flattering remarks about my ball skills, I'm more impressed by my dominant farming skills.
