McCain is a freaking moron. He thinks having a no-name, no-experience governor of Alaska as his VP mate is going to win over women and change voters? Really? This is the advice he’s getting? Well, I’m usually one who thinks my own knowledge in any particular area is so dramatically exceeded by true experts in that field (as well as by the general complexity and unpredictability of issues and events) that I don’t put too much stock in my non-expert, biased opinions. But I’m going to go with my gut on this one and posit that he’s made a stupid choice. Could have done much better. I really don’t see a liberal or moderate woman abandoning their once in a lifetime, history making African American change-everything-bad-in-the-world-including-body-odor “Lincoln” for an unknown right wing woman in the mostly ceremonial role of VP. And you think change voters care that McCain picked some Washington outsider from Alaska as VP when they can go with the god of change himself? And he’ll be president, not just VP. Or was he trying to pick someone to shore up his own shaky conservative bona fides? That one doesn’t make sense to me either. I think the base would have been much more energized by Romney or Jindal. If I were Romney or Pawlenty I would be bugged (and some reports say they are). Seems like they were strung along as decoys. I’m not saying I think he’ll lose. I have no idea. But I think his VP pick is lame and boring, and if he does win, it won't be because his VP puts him over the edge.

On the other hand (but this is a very small, arthritic, shriveled-up hand), it is kind of neat that no matter who wins this election, history will have been made.

Now onto a totally unrelated subject. There has been some speculation of late that I have perhaps read the Twilight books. The answer is no. Although I wouldn’t be ashamed if I had, and just might one day, to see what all the fuss is about and to have a better idea of the man with whom I compete (losingly) for my wife’s lust.

Anyway, I don’t have time to read those books, as I’m moving on from writing my Skylight series to a new series with a totally new direction. The first book is titled “The Host with the Most.” It’s about Zorb, the handsome purple Zerkoustrian with 22 ears who runs an interplanetary hotel at the northern edge of the 9th sector. He has all sorts of zany adventures trying to manage a hotel at which you never know who’s going to drop in!

Chris, I can't wait to see that book. I do hope you'll stay with your "skylight" series to completion though.

I was shocked by that choice too. I have heard some good things about her though, so I guess I'll wait and see.

LOL. Kook, please don't switch from Skylight. Your add could cause a serious loss to the literary world if you do.

Respectfully, I have to say I think McCain was quite savvy with this pick in a sort of desperate-hail-mary-pass kind of way. I am intrigued and excited about Palin in a way I wouldn't have been about Romney et al. I can't believe they really thought they would ever get disaffected Hillary voters and I doubt that was the intent. If I'm wrong and it was, then it was big-time dumb.

Like you, Chris, I see things on more of a "wholesale" or, I think, an objective level. I distrust my instincts on the retail level, and defer to the great strategists who know these things. Moreover, Palin may, and I hope does, have some intrinsic characteristics--articulate, strong, appealing, charisma?--that will justify her being chosen.

That being said, and with all due respect to Gov. Palin, McCain's choice seems really lame to me: 1 1/2 years as governor of a state with a population of 670,000 people--the size of Memphis. Utah's population is 2.7M, NM 2M, Mass. 6.5M. Her experience seems pretty limited, even at the state level. She was mayor of a town half the size of Farmington--so maybe I should be offended, too, at being passed over.

I hope we are proven wrong. But I don't think being a woman, a mother, socially conservative, a party renegade, addresses the BIG concern about voting for a 72-year old guy: He might die and whoever is on deck ought to know about Georgia--the one in Asia. Nor does it pull the indie voter who thinks Republicans have totally messed up the economy and the war. How does she get McCain anything on those fronts.

It's diametric to Biden--but I don't see many people rejecting Obama because of Biden.

He could have done much better.

Whether or not she's a good person- its not like thats what side the media will glorify. They'll still rant about McCain's age, temper, and moderate conservatism. And, it does appear as if it was a desperate move- no one knows her, she's had no major political career (I refer to Alaska)...let's face it, he picked her because she's a woman- point blank. And, I hate to see someone get used like that. Personally, I think McCain is headed for a big defeat and our country is headed for the biggest reality check yet b/c Obama has got some CRAZY ideas for reform and he has almost no government experience himself. What kind of madness is our country headed for? Mitt Romney, we need you!

McCain's pick did seem so weird. I mean I've heard good things about her and all but I just have a hard time beleiving it was the best strategic move. Although I did hear the evangelicals are thrilled and are lining up to support this ticket, which is probably why he couldn't go with Romney (which is soooo annoying to me). Anyway, if they do win unless she is just AMAZING he hasn't set us up very well for the next election.

I don't think that hand is shriveled or arthritic. History in the making!! Really, it's going to be a Trivial Pursuit question someday.

Although I'm still not looking forward to November 4th.

I don't really agree with you Chris. I KNOW you have read those books! :) OKay, so what I really don't agree with is your disagreement with McCain's choice. I was surprised and would have definitely preferred Romney...but I think in the political climate Palin is an excellent choice. Although she is young and somewhat inexperienced (very experienced compared to Obama) I think she has a lot of backbone and integrity that a lot of people will learn to respect and admire about her. And I think she will end up reeling in a whole other niche of people to vote for their ticket. I am not saying they are going to win b/c I think it's a longshot....but I think it's going to be interesting. I am VERY inexperienced and ignorant etc....but those are my opinions.

Did you watch the RNC last night?

When I first heard that Palin was the choice for VP I felt a little bit like you do. However, the more I hear about her the more that I really like her. I admire her ability to step into the political firestorm and handle it so well.
I love that there is a strong, smart and tough women (who is also a mother of 5) who was chosen to be VP for McCain.
I think it is interesting that everybody says that she has no experience - maybe she doesn't have "Washington" experience but she has run a city and a state; she has executive experience... which is more than can be said for the Democratic ticket.
It will be interesting to see how things shape up in the next several months, esp the VP debates. Regardless I like her. If the US is looking for change (aka Obama) then I think it is a good move for the Republicans to bring a young, fresh face to the ticket.

Well, this isn't Emily, but rather Emily's mom who does not have her own google account! Sarah Palin - who is she? That was my comment a week ago, and a week later I am sold on her! She has been amazing to see and hear - confident, smart, well spoken, a mother of five children, faithful and honest - with enough experience to merit the call.
She seems like 'one of us' and not 'one of them.' I think McCain's choice was brilliant and has brought a lot of excitement to the ticket, but I hope he brings Romney on to advise him all things economic! Becky
