Dinosaur Train

Have you ever been throwing a kid in the air, or playing a game, or singing a song with them and they ask over and over to do it again? If they like whatever you are doing, it's always you who imposes the end on the event, not them.

Anyway, the other night, Oliver and I were singing part of the song to Oliver's favorite show, Dinosaur train, and he kept wanting to do it again. So I started wondering how many times he would want to do this, assuming I complied for as long at it took. And when he was over it, I wondered exactly what that would look like. Like ancient sailors imagining the end of the flat earth, I had never seen the end of a toddler's capacity for an activity he is loving, and I was really curious what that end would look like. Would he go until he fell asleep, would he say he didn't want to do that anymore, or would he just throw up or implode at some point? So I settled in the for long haul, and only started singing the song again when he asked me to. Next time you wonder how many times your short associate will repeat the fun activity if it's left to him, the answer is...

61

And the conclusion was as anti-climactic as most things in life. After 61, he just looked at me for a few seconds, and instead of asking to do it again, he asked for a "treat of a pumpkin" (those little pumpkin shaped candies his grandma sent him).

What a daddy you are. I can't believe your patience. You should publish this in a scientific journal. It has to have some academic interest. I'm tired just reading about it.

That is so awesome. The video really made me laugh. Amazing. I have never considered doing that experiment before, despite endless opportunities. Molly makes me throw her up in the air perpetually, but I don't think I could handle more than ten. Maybe I'll try and outlast her one of these days. I'm just afraid I'd be tempted to end it by dropping her if she kept it up too long.

I love it! We just got a good laugh out of that. 61...that's amazing. Good for you, Christian.

Next question: How many more times did you sing to yourself that song after Oliver stopped requesting it?

Chris, that is truly as fascinating as it is hilarious, and I think you should get some kind of scientific award for being willing to do such painstaking evidence gathering! Wow.

So interesting how it ended.

LOL quote "your short associate"

I love that you did that. I was dissapointed, though, that the video didn't show the moment he lost interest.

I LOVE that you did that. I don't think it would ever occur to me to see how long it would last. Fascinating experiment, it would be so fun to compare the numbers of each of the kids. Mostly, I'm so impressed you actually did that 61 times!!!!

All of the comments keep calling you a "Great Dad" and "Patient" and "Loving." But this is the kind of morbid curiosity that propels all manner of unholy science. You actually wondered if he would implode? Despicable... But funny.
